Shielded Hearts all began with Catherine, pursuing God's leading to gather women who understand each other as women in relationships with men in law enforcement.  She knew that she wanted to be with people who understand her, and what it is like to be married to a cop.  There were several times she just did not know what to do; when her husband would come home after being with someone as they died; having a friend commit suicide; or dealing with negative press in the news.  The department has offered just one day of training for him in his four years on the force; there is even less for families. So, she started by getting together with Rachel and Amy, two ladies who live near her.

While looking for support, Catherine talked with people outside the police force, but quickly realized that no matter how good their intentions were, they didn't have a clue what it is like to be in our shoes.  It was then that she realized that we need to support each other.

Catherine began to invite people over to her house for some casual dinners beginning in December of 2006.  Friendships started to form, and the excitement grew.  There was a strong desire to start a group where we could invite speakers that were relevant to our issues (our relationships, stress, families and taking care of ourselves)...A place where we could get together over a cup of coffee, learn from someone who has been there, and start to get to know other ladies who truly understand what it is like to be married to a Law Enforcement Officer.

In April of 2007, plans started to be made to formalize things a little bit.  Becca joined the team, solidifying the fact that this group is not just for Milwaukee Police families, but for women whose husbands are in departments throughout the Greater Milwaukee Area.  Shortly thereafter, we received some unexpected sources of funding, making the dream a reality.

In the last year we have begun to not only focus on the needs of women in long term relationships with men in law enforcement but have begun to serve the community.  In 2009 we volunteered by organizing the Children's area for TYMPD (Thank You Milwaukee Police Department.)  Along with putting together our first annual Teddy Bear Drive which collected over 2000 stuffed animals which police officers were than able to hand out to children caught in difficult situations.

After three years of meeting, we are now just about at 100 members strong and growing!  We are thrilled to see what is in store for us as we proceed into our fourth year.  Please see the Events page for more information about upcoming activities.
