3- What types of expenses does Shielded Hearts incur?

Shielded Hearts desires to be proactive in meeting the needs of police families, as well as be prepared to be reactive when the need arises.

Our expenses up until this point have existed, but we have been able to keep them relatively small.  Such expenses include: web development, renting meeting rooms, decorations, printing brochures and other material, supplementing the cost of childcare, tokens of appreciation for our speakers, and postage.  Projects that have cost more include: putting together care packages that go to injured officers and their families; responding to other needs that critically injured officers have- including food for family and friends at the hospital, meals at home, some childcare, and yard care needs; sending out cards; running the Children's area at TYMPD I and II; Teddy Bear Drive (advertising, collecting, and cleaning stuffed animals); and training for the members of our Care and Concern Team.

We have two projects that we would like to pursue, but are beyond our current financial ability.

One, we are in the process of filing to become our own 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

Two, we would like to make a resource packet available to all members of Shielded Hearts (and others as needed). This packet would include:

  • "Cops don't Cry," a book written by a police wife but no longer available to purchase cost effectively in the US.
  • Information about how to get involved in Shielded Hearts, from bi-monthly meetings, service opportunities, and connecting with other women.
  • An explanation of our Care and Concern team, with how they can either get involved and/or who to contact when a critical incident happens.

4- Where do you get your donations?

Up until this point (1-1-2011), there have been a few people, schools, churches, and businesses that have given small donations throughout the years.  Often the cost associated with running Shielded Hearts have been paid out of pocket by our members.  In January 2011, we were approached by someone wanting to organize our first official fundraiser.  We look forward to being able to continue and expand our vision of being "a community of women finding hope in police life through education, friendship, service, and faith."

5- Do you have any paid staff?

No, Shielded Hearts is run by several very dedicated volunteers, along with many people that serve as they are available.  Yet as our organization grows there may be a time that we will likely have to hire one or two part time staff.  We understand that with over 140 members currently and growing, realistically we may have to move from being an all volunteer organization.  This step will only happen after funds are available on a regular basis to run the current programs.

6- Why don't you just charge a membership fee to cover your expenses?

Shielded Hearts is only in its 4th year of existence.  While more people are getting to know we exist and what we do, we are still relatively new.  We feel that a membership fee (at this time) would inhibit some of those women that really could benefit from participating from becoming members.  Even if we did ask for a membership fee, it would not be enough to expand what is currently provided.

7- Do you charge for childcare?

When we are able to offer childcare, we do ask for a small donation based on the number of children being cared for, $3/one; $5/ two; and $7/three or more children.  Because we are committed to quality childcare this does not actually cover the whole cost, but we believe it is a reasonable amount of money to ask women to pay.  We do believe that with police officers changing schedule and unusual hours, we must provide childcare as often as possible to allow women to be able to attend our functions.

We desire to be as open and honest as possible as to where the generous donations of those that give to Shielded Hearts is spent.  If you have a question that is not answered here please feel free to contact us.
